No power. That’s what life has been like here since 4pm yesterday afternoon until this evening. I had worked on kits all morning yesterday. After lunch I ran an errand on the way to hospice. My plans were to visit awhile then head back home to fix dinner. Marcy arrived at hospice around 3pm to visit. I had talked with Frances and agreed I would stay until time to take mom to get some dinner before dropping her off at Frances and Al’s. Frances was working and Al wanted to stay home and do some things around the house.
I was telling Marcy there was a threat of bad weather late in the afternoon so we turned on the TV. Sure enough there were watches up all over the place and a nasty line of storms heading toward Winston. About that time the skies turned dark and the wind kicked up. When I tried to call Bob the house phone rolled over to my cell which means; no power, no phone. Marcy called Hugh who lives roughly a mile or so from us. He said the storm came up here all of a sudden, power was out, and it looked like a war zone with trees down everywhere. In the meantime Frances called me on her cell to let me know they had shut down work and she was trying to make it home but was blocked from going down the major road, Silas Creek, and was working her way on the back roads. I finally talked to Bob on his cell. He said not to try to come home that everything over here was a mess plus the storm had just hit at hospice with driving rain, lightening, and thunder.
I suggested to Frances she drive on to Elizabeth’s pizza which is about a mile from hospice to see if they had power. Once the storm moved on Mom, Marcy, and I met Frances and Al at the restaurant. By the time we ate and I ordered take out for Bob it was about 7pm. I drove the back way home with no problem until I reached our neighborhood. I tried to go in one way and had to turn around and go back out and around to get in the neighborhood and to our street.
We only had limbs and sticks down. Several houses has trees down in the yard or house. By the time Frances and Al arrived home they had power. This morning we were still without power. We pulled the generator out to crank up to run the freezer and fridge but could not get it started. I had to leave for a 9am appointment to meet Frances, Al, and mom at the funeral home. We made the tentative arrangements for dad’s service.
In the meantime Bob talked to our neighbor Steve, an automobile mechanic, who came over to see if he could get it running. They were still working when I arrived back home. Steve finally got it started and running around noon. We plugged up the appliances, ate a snack lunch, and I took off for hospice. Dad is not doing too good today but, as you know, that may not mean anything. Frances and Al arrived sometime later with lunch for mom. We discussed parent business in the nearby family room while both mom and dad slept. I left to run an errand and pick up takeout. We spent the evening sitting outside on the porch until the power came on at 7pm. Fortunately after the storm went through yesterday it brought cool temps and a breeze making it not too bad in the house without air. Still, it was nicer outside with the breeze plus we could use the natural light for reading.
