Late yesterday afternoon Bob and I went over to Frances and Al’s for my 60th birthday party. We were joined by Paul, Mary, and Bonnie. Several months ago I had asked Frances if she would make the birthday cake mom used to make for us when we were growing up. She found the recipe in mom’s recipe box when we cleaned out the house. I remember it being a chocolate two layer cake which was covered in a very strange thin type icing and included a cup of black coffee in the recipe. It’s been thirty years or more since the last time mom baked it but if you look at old birthday pictures of us the cake is featured. It was delicious and tasted just as I remembered it.
Long story short, in addition to the cake, Frances wanted to throw me a little party which was fineas long as she kept it small and did not go to a lot of trouble for herself. She ordered fruit and veggie trays along with a regular sheet birthday cake from Lowe’s. We ordered pizza for the main meal.
In keeping with mom’s spirit of celebrating birthdays Frances filled a gift bag with an assortment of small gifts mom would have purchased for me had she been with us including a new ornament for my tree with the year and my favorite Moravian cookies along with a few other chocolate favorites. Frances found me a cute wine stopper with a Border Collie on top. We had a great time and I appreciate Al and Frances making this particular birthday a special time.
House cleaning chores this morning. More kit stuff this afternoon.
