I was trimming Colin’s nails this morning and cut on of the black ones on his right rear paw too close to the quick. The clippers have a stop guard to prevent that from happening but the nail was already short enough or the quick had grown out very far. It bled a lot worse than the couple of times I nicked Duncan and Malcolm. I used have some styptic powder but could not find it. I called the vet and they suggested corn starch. Twenty minutes later it was still bleeding so I called to let them know I was bringing him in.
Since it was almost time for his yearly shots and physical they asked me if I wanted to do that while I was there. In the meantime the nail quit bleeding so she decided not to cauterize it but she gave me a silver nitrate stick to bring home just in case.
We were not back home long when it started bleeding again so I applied the nitrate and that stopped it immediately. He is fine.
This afternoon we drove to Blevins to pick up boards and cinder blocks to make our fire wood rack.
