I arrived home around 2pm after another wonderful week at the John C. Campbell Folk School.

My typical day at the school starts at 7am. Shower, dress, and head to the Keith Hall Community room in the middle of the “campus” for Morning Song. 30 minutes of songs and/or playing of instrument(s), sometimes by folks that are teaching that week. We go from there down the hill to the dinning hall for 8:15 breakfast. All meals are served family style. They have a small place set up for vegetarian and a special diet window at the back of the dinning hall.

From 9am to noon we are in our studios learning our craft for the week. 12:15pm back to the dinning hall for lunch until 1:30. Back to the studio for afternoon work. We can work until 5 or 6 depending on if the instructor or anyone else wants to go the 4:45 demos or field trips. 6pm is dinner than on your own. I have gone back to the studio to work and also gone to some of the evening entertainments. A lot of the evening activities like the dancing are also open to the public. A lot of the locals come to participate.

I say “campus” because it’s actually many buildings; studios, residences, dinning hall, etc. on a very large tract of land that was once a farm. They grow a lot of the vegetables we eat for our meals. Much of the land is natural woods with paths for cutting for getting from one place to another.

Check out their web site and consider taking a class. I only do week long classes due to the 5-1/2 hour drive to get there. It is a beautiful setting in a very pretty part of the the mountains of NC. It will be the best week you can imagine.
