It was 52 degrees when I took Colin out this morning with mostly cloudy skies and calm winds. Later in the morning the wind picked up to 10 to 20 mph gusts low humidity and lots of sunshine.
There are two black walnut trees on the right side of the yard just about the property line with the house next door that was remodeled. One is huge, the other a smaller one. I had been wanting to get rid of them because they make a mess in the yard dropping the nuts. Also, when we have wind or weather in winter the larger branches at the top come down making another mess.
Bob wanted to sell them for wood but could not get anyone to that would pay us to take them down. It would cost a fortune to have a tree company do it. So we just tabled that project.
I saw a story in a local magazine about a company that makes stuff out of walnut, etc. I e-mailed the guy several months ago to see if he was interested in the wood. After taking a look at the trees he said they would harvest them at no cost to me nor would he pay me.
Today he and two of this partners came to take the big one down. They are hauling off all the big pieces they can use. We piled the brush at the top of the hill. James will haul off the brush and cut the bigger limbs they cannot use into firewood for himself. All it will cost me is what I pay James to haul the brush. I was delighted once the tree was down to see it is good inside and will make some nice tables, etc. Sometimes the tree is rotten and not of any use. We think its about 70 or 80 years old.
They will come back next month and take down the small one which has very little top limbs and brush. I spent the day helping them haul the brush up the hill. They are using winches and chains now to load the wood on their flatbed trailers. Some of the big pieces weigh at least 2000 to 4000 pounds.
