If
you live where the sun is shining take a moment to enjoy it. We have
not seen much of the sun other than a few hours last Tuesday and
Wednesday for well over a week now. I had a haircut appointment at
5:30. Although it was drizzling when on the way to work and remained
cool and cloudy all day it was dry enough for me to mow when I got
home. We had a late, light dinner then I walked the dogs. Bob had to
stay close by the phone waiting on a call.
I am reading the latest Rhys Bowen, Molly Murphy series mystery,
Tell Me, Pretty Maiden. Molly's private investigation business has
flourished since her return from Ireland. So much so that she has asked
her friend and love interest Daniel Sullivan to help out with some of
her cases while he is on suspension from the New York Police. Among her
cases Molly has been asked by an aging stage actress to investigate a
series of accidents that keep happening near her during the rehearsal
of a new production. In order to be at the actresses side every minute
of the rehearsal Molly has taken a part in the production as a
bluestocking non participant chorus girl to draw comic relief to the
show.

One of those weeks where I am getting home
late/have something every night. Last night was gym night since I
missed Monday night to mow. Tonight we had dinner with Paul and Mary. I
picked Bob up after work for a quick trip to the drugstore on the way
out to pick them up for dinner at the Mexican restaurant. Tomorrow
night will be gym night again.
I have a dentist appointment in the morning. Although it is not until
9:45 it is not worth the extra gas and effort to drive to work for an
hour, leave for the dentist, then go back. Instead, we can sleep in a
little later than usual. I have been taking short lunches to make up
the time.
The weather finally turned off nice today with some sunshine finally
peaking through the clouds. It warmed up too, making it almost to 70
degrees.
I've almost finished the Molly Murphy Murphy. The next Vineyard in the
series is one I picked up a long time ago at the used book store so I
guess I will grab that one next.

I have been trying to get to the library to
return and pick up some books. December of this year will mark 10 years
since I left the library system. The first few years after I left I did
volunteer work before becoming a member of the Friends of the Library.
For the first time in a very long time I do not have an association
with the library other than being a devoted user.
Thursday morning I had planned to stop on my way to the dentist but
realized as I went to turn into the parking lot they do not open until
10. The branch libraries used to open at 9 but due to budget cuts and
lack of sufficient staff they started opening at 10. The staff arrive
for work at their usual time, either 8:30 or 9 which gives them plenty
of time to get reserves pulled, books checked in from the book drop,
etc. They close at 6 on Thursday and Friday evenings. I don't like to
make other stops after work on the way to the gym to give me time to
get in a good 45 to 50 minute workout and still get home to fix dinner
at a reasonable hour. Those same branches used to be open on Thursday
nights until 9 but those hours were cut as well.
Tonight, I stopped on the way home to find they were closed for
inventory. This is something new they started since I left so I have no
idea what they are doing. I went on the grocery store having still not
been able to get in the library. Sort of funny to be on the other side
of the fence so to speak with frustrations of getting to the library
when during the right hours. By the way, cutting the hours has not
succeeded in getting more money or staff, just frustrated the users.
It was another warm day. I did take a quick walk up the street to grab a light lunch and some fresh air.

Busy day. I picked mom and dad up at 8:30 to
drive out to one of our premier lawn and garden stores about 25 minutes
or so from where they live. They sell a garden glove that I love and
have only been able to find there plus the folks wanted to get some
plants. I picked up some cheap ground cover and a new garden flag and
pole. I have an old one in the front which I moved to the back garden.
From there we drove back toward town to a small mom and pop garden
store where we met up with Frances and Al. They had some plants dad
wanted to get from them. I bought one for the front garden. We then all
headed to the Orchard for lunch before I took mom and dad back home.
It thundered and rained off and on all morning while we were at both
garden stores. Bob said it poured down here for a few minutes making
the grass too wet to mow. An hour of so after I got home I took the
guys out back. I started working on one of my landscaping projects
where I have the wash problem. With all this rain it's a good day to
dig up grass/sod. I filled in the small sunken area with sod and dirt
where I widened out the the natural area. I will put the ground cover
in there. I need to get some dirt and mulch to fill in the area before
I can put the plants in. Now I have just one small strip to mow along
that side before I get to the back yard. When the maple tree gets fully
leafed out there is just too much shade in there to try and grow grass.
That one strip is out far enough it may survive with the added sod I
just filled in with and some grass seed.
I dug up some bulbs I wanted to transplant. My neighbor wanted a couple
of those when I did the transplant so I shared some with her. And of
course while I had all this gardening activity going on I played some
ball with the dogs. Duncan mostly laid in the grass and watched. The
sun has been in and out for long enough with the wind to dry out the
grass enough that I think I can mow. While the potatoes boil for dinner
I can mow and shower before I throw the steaks and chicken on the grill.

I actually did not finish up in the yard
yesterday until 6:30. After I finished the mowing the curb and sidewalk
needed the first edging for the year. That one is always the hardest
because you have to edge in a new grove after the winter. Plus, the
ground is still pretty wet. By the time I finished the edging it was
well after 5 and I was getting tired.
I came in for a quick shower and to fix dinner. After dinner while Bob
walked the dogs I went back out and swept up the grass and dirt from
the edging.
This morning I did the weekly house cleaning chores then took the dogs
out back for some playtime. Yesterday the high was in the 70's today it
is to be 57. At least the sun has been shinning most of the day. After
lunch I paid the bills, balanced the checkbook, cleaned up my desk and
ironed a load of work shirts and pants.
Bob's working on the taxes and doing the laundry. The Masters golf
tournament will be on shortly. I shall take the rest of the afternoon
off to watch the golf, finish reading the newspaper and catch up on
some magazine reading.
