The start to the 2001 NASCAR Winston
Cup is overshadowed by the death of the one of the greatest drivers
of the modern era, Dale
Earnhardt, Sr. Although I was not a fan of him or his style of driving,
it is always hard for a sport to lose a superhero. How ironic that
Michael Waltrip, after 462 starts, wins his first race driving for the first time in an Earnhardt-owned car. It will definitely
cast a very dark shadow over the racing season.
Racing, like golf and tennis, is one of those sports where the fans can
still get up close and personal with the stars. Race fans are loyal for
this reason. Almost all the teams have open areas of their shops to allow
fans to visit. Some days they may get lucky and catch the driver for an
autograph or a chat. When the sport loses a hero that you watch week
after week it makes it hard on all the fans. Dale Earnhardt grew up not
far from Winston-Salem. His car owner Richard Childress is from
Winston-Salem. This is Earnhardt country. I am not an autograph seeker nor
a rabid fan. I enjoy watching the racing, cheering for my favorite drivers
and watching the way they perform both on and off the track.
Jayski's racing
web site has a memorial page with information about his life and links
to all the major newspaper articles with interviews and stories. The show
will go on but without one of its most brightest, controversial, and
colorful stars.

Yesterday
After my regular Monday morning workout at the gym I returned home and
worked at the computer most of the day. I took a couple of breaks to watch
some of the news conferences being held on Earnhardt. We had home made
pizza for dinner and watched our Buffy/Angel tape. At 8:00 Animal Planet
had the AKC dog agility trials. Naturally a Border Collie won in all three
of the large dog size classes and a real pretty Shetland Sheepdog won the
small breed class. Then it was time to walk the dogs and head off to bed
to read for awhile.
Today
I have to take Kerry to the vet at 9:00 for a check up, his
vaccinations, and to see about a cough he has had for a few months. Then,
I have a doctor's appointment at 11:20, so it will be a busy morning. I
need to work on web columns this afternoon. Bob and I may have to go buy a
new television. The picture components or whatever looks like they are
failing.
Frances, this is the link to the Foundations
for the Carolina's you were looking for.

Yesterday
Kerry is fine especially for a dog of thirteen. We have decided to put
him on a vet prescribed medicine to ease the pain in his hips. The vet
feels like his quality of life is still good. I returned Kerry home and
then took off to run and errand and go for my doctor's appointment. I am
fine too.
After a quick lunch break I spent most of the afternoon in the office
working. I stopped to fix dinner and walk the dogs and then I worked until
at 9:30. We walked the dogs and then I watched NYPD Blue. We forgot to put
the tape in for Buffy/Angel so I guess we miss those episodes for this
week.
Today
Dad and I are supposed to play golf this morning but the weather looks
a bit iffy. I still need to go over so we can go to Lowe's and get his
lawn supplies and I need to do a couple of things on that side of town as
well.
I am still reading the Frances Mayes' book Bella
Tuscany. I have been working at night after dinner and have not
had as much reading time lately so I am not plowing through as quickly as
I usually do. I am also still reading the book of dog quotes that I picked
up at the bookstore last week. Speaking of dogs. Roger Caras, author of
animal care and training books and the announcer for years at the
Westminster Kennel Dog Show died yesterday of a heart
attack.

It's snowing! We woke up this
morning to a white wonderland. The weather guys were calling for sleet or
freezing rain but instead we are getting a beautiful snowfall.
Yesterday
Although it was overcast dad and I did get in a short round of golf on
the little executive course. It only takes two hours to play but makes a
nice course to practice iron play and your short game. Just as we finished
and got back to the house for lunch it started to rain. After lunch we ran
a few errands and then I headed home.
After getting my shower I answered mail and read web pages. Bob and I
left around 4:00 to go over to the library and pick up Lenore a burger on
the way home. Then we left to eat dinner and go to the Forsyth
Astronomical Association meeting at the nearby science museum. It was
close to 10:00 by the time we got back home. After walking the dogs and
playing with them for awhile it was off to bed.
Today
Did I mention it was snowing? No plans today except work and
play outside with the dogs. It was 65 degrees here yesterday and this
morning we woke up to a snow covered yard. We also had thunder and
lightning this morning while it was snowing.
The first fall of snow is not only an event, it is a magical event.
You go to bed in one kind of world and wake up in another quite different,
and if this is not without enchantment then where is it to be found? --

I have pictures on the border
collie page of the guys out enjoying the snow.
Yesterday
It snowed most of the morning and then tapered off to just a little
freezing drizzle periodically. By late in the afternoon the precipitation
had stopped but it stayed to cold to doing any melting. I fixed dinner and
spent the evening catching up on reading the small pile of magazines that
came in this week.
Today
The sun is out and it is supposed to warm up to the low 50's so most of
the snow will be gone by this afternoon. The roads that were still wet
last night are a bit slick this morning but they should start melting off
pretty soon. I am heading off to the gym and grocery store this morning. I
need to work on my web site column this afternoon and Bob mentioned
something about building a new system.
If you have big weekend plans made, I hope you enjoy them.

Yesterday I spent most of the day working.
The sun came out and melted most of the snow although the temperatures did
not get all that warm. Last night we watched West Wing taped from
Wednesday night while we were gone. I finished Bella
Tuscany and started a fiction book I picked up two years ago
on our Mackinac Island trip. More on that
next week when I have read a little more.
Today
Plans for the day are a mixed bag of work and TV. I will work on my web
review column this morning and probably tonight. The qualifying is later
this morning for the race tomorrow from Rockingham,
NC and the Busch race follows. I may watch a little of that race but
plan to work until late this afternoon and then watch the golf from
California.

Great news for Tom and Leah. Landon has his cast off!!! I
know that family is happy to have that ordeal over with.
Yesterday
Other than taking a few short breaks I worked pretty much all day up
until time to make dinner. Last night we read and listened to some
classical music.
Today
It is pouring rain this morning which means the race in Rockingham, NC
maybe delayed or cancelled. This is house cleaning morning so guess
I better get started. Afternoon plans are up in the air depending on the
status of the race.
